HENDERSON COUNTY TAILGATE MARKET CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY
The Henderson County Tailgate Market celebrated its 40th Anniversary season, Saturday, July 20th.
Like they did in 1979, farmers and vendors set up either from the back of their vehicle tailgates or under canopies to offer fresh Henderson County produce, plants, baked goods, handmade Appalachian crafts and more.
Tomato farmer and vendor Gary Steiner perhaps summed it up best, “I’m thankful for the time and energy given from so many different people to allow this market to be successful for 40 years.”
The celebration was sponsored by Triskelion Brewing Company with entertainment provided by The Gathering Dark. The Hendersonville Shrine Club was on hand in the non-profit booth. Other offerings during the festivities were food demonstrations, samplings, the kid’s zone and other surprises.
The market offers SNAP/EBT recipients a chance to use their benefits to purchase Henderson County goods, with support from “Healthy People, Healthy Carolinas,” an initiative of the Duke Endowment. Debit and credit cards are also accepted.
The Henderson County Tailgate Market features fresh county grown produce. It is one of the oldest and most successful open air markets in Western North Carolina.
The season is open to the public through October 26 from 8am to 12 noon at 100 North King Street in the parking lot of the county office building. Visit online at: www.hendersoncountytailgatemarket.com.
Ernie Thurston was hired by "North Carolina Agricultural Marketing Project" in Raleigh to begin and organize a market in Hendersonville during the summer of 1979. To this day, Mr. Thurston is proud of what he started and how the Henderson County Tailgate Market has grown over the years. Click below to view Mr. Thurston's collection of photos. He is the one holding the Farmers' Fair banner in a couple of the photos.
Ernie recently dropped by the market to say hello.
